September News
From the Principal’s Desk

Our faculty arrived on Wednesday, September 1st for the beginning of another school year and to participate in our two day in-service. It was great to see everyone so excited to get the new school year started. Our keynote speaker this year was Ms. Christine Landwehrle, Curriculum and Instruction Supervisor from Bedminster Township Public Schools. Ms. Landwehrle was trained by the State of New Jersey on implementing PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities) with her staff. This summer, members of our Professional Development Team met with Ms. Landwehrle and developed a presentation for our faculty in Watchung. The staff response was very positive. PLC’s are beginning to meet and teachers are writing their Smart Goals for the year.

The first day of school “Welcome Breakfast” was sponsored once again by the PTO. Parents of kindergarten and new students to Bayberry enjoyed some refreshments as they had an opportunity to meet other parents and the administration.

“Back to School Nights” were held on September 21st and September 23rd beginning with a parent meeting in our All Purpose Room followed by individual presentations in the classrooms. Our special subject teachers were here for both nights and gave a short synopsis of their curriculum.

The PTO Ice Cream Social that was held at Bayberry School on Wednesday, September 15th, was well attended. Students and parents from Bayberry and Valley View enjoyed ice cream while they visited with neighbors and friends.

After-school activities began during the week of September 27th. This year our students were able to choose from the following activities; Sports Club, Community Service Club, Peer Mediators Club, Girls on the Run, and In Pursuit of Excellence.

Our month ended with some rainy weather and a power outage in most of the building at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 30th. Our teachers and students made the best of the situation by moving to the All Purpose Room or one of the five classrooms that still had power. By 9:40 a.m. the lights came back on and everyone was back to business as usual. I truly appreciate the assistance of all the Bayberry teachers as well as Eric Schwartz, Danuta Tkaczyk, Claudio Argemi, Kathy DiFranco and Camille DiNardo. I also have to thank our bus drivers who waited at the school for news about the need to evacuate as well as Joe Cina from the Watchung Police Department. Each person played an important role to ensure that our students felt safe and secure.

We’re off to a great start of the 2010-2011 school year! Please check your child’s classroom website for specific information about events in the classroom during October.
