European Rivalries in North America

 

 

Chapter Overview

In addition to the English, the Spanish and French also claim land in North America. Students will study how the Spanish come to control much of the Southwest and West and the French control much of what is now the Middle West and Canada. Specifically, students will

     *describe the purpose and location of Spanish settlements in New Mexico.

     *analyze the conflict between the Pueblo and Spanish.

     *explain why Spain wanted to expand its settlements to Texas and California.

     *describe the importance of New France's fur trade.

     *describe early French settlements in North America.

     *evaluate the conflict over land that led England and France to war.

     *analyze the events related to the French and Indian War.
