Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS)
As per N.J.A.C. 6A:16-7, district boards of educations are required to:
"… establish and implement a coordinated system in each school building for the planning and delivery of intervention and referral services that are designed to assist students who are experiencing learning, behavior, or health difficulties and to assist staff who have difficulties in addressing students' learning, behavior or health needs."
What is I&RS?
I&RS is a school-based team that designs and monitors the implementation of strategies for educating non-classified students who are referred because they are experiencing difficulties in their classes. The I&RS Team uses a proactive approach to assist teachers in the creation of resources and implementation of action plans for students struggling with academic, personal, social, emotional, and occupational challenges.
The primary purpose of the I&RS Team is to plan and provide appropriate interventions for students within the general education population who are experiencing difficulty. The intent is to coordinate with staff members and parents/guardians in order to increase the quantity and effectiveness of student interventions.
If you believe that your student/child would benefit from services through the I&RS, you are encouraged to speak to the school counselor.
