Update from the Superintendent, 8-25-2020

 Office of the Superintendent

August 25, 2020

Dear Parents and School Community Members,

At its meeting last night, the board adopted the district’s Restart and Recovery Plan, which is now on the district website. The plan was reviewed and affirmed for completeness by the Somerset County Education Office last week and, as you know, is based on a hybrid model. I want to thank the board for its support and contributions, the administrative leadership team for its strategic development of the plan, and the entire restart committee for its good questions and thoughtful suggestions. This was a collaborative effort, and though it is subject to change, we are very pleased with the results. I want to thank the staff for their commitment to implementing this plan and providing our students with the best possible education under the circumstances.

We also are pleased to report that the board appointed Mrs. Michele Posehn to fill the board member position, which became vacant in July when Mr. Mattiassi resigned. We thank Mr. Mattiassi for over five years of dedicated service and welcome Mrs. Posehn, who has been an active volunteer in support of our schools.

It also is a pleasure to report that the board accepted a donation of iPads and chromebooks worth $70K from the Watchung Educational Foundation (WEF), made possible by the remarkable generosity of the Bisignano family. We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary support of our students and our schools.

Later this week, our principals will send families a welcome-back letter with important school-specific information. You also will receive information about the district’s before/after care program, scheduled to start on September 8, the first day of school.

As September nears, let me take this opportunity to remind everyone that the reopening of the schools is a team effort, and we urge everyone to take the health and safety protocols very seriously. As you know, everyone attending school in person will be required to complete a daily screening form through Genesis. Please remember the most important thing parents can do to contribute to this effort is to keep their children home, if they are sick. The three most important things we can do in school are to watch our distance, wash our hands, and wear a face covering. Please reinforce this at home.

Let me also remind everyone that this new experience is a chance to learn and grow together, see teaching and learning in different and creative ways, and model responsibility and resilience for our children. We will keep you updated. Thank you for your ongoing support and patience.

Very truly yours,

George P. Alexis
