Update from the Superintendent, 8-4-2020

 Office of the Superintendent

August 4, 2020

Dear Parents and School Community Members,

At its meeting last night, the Board of Education adopted a hybrid model for in-person instruction and approved a revised calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The first day of school for students is now September 8. I am sharing last night’s presentation, which outlines the hybrid model and provides an overview of the district’s restart plan. The presentation is on the district website, along with the Hybrid Model Schedule Summary, so families can prepare for the upcoming school year.

As communicated previously, the model limits physical occupancy at no more than 50% during in-person instruction through a four-day hybrid schedule. Two cohorts, A and B, will be created alphabetically to keep siblings on the same in-person schedule. Cohort A attends in-person instruction on Mondays and Tuesdays. Cohort B attends in-person instruction on Thursdays and Fridays. During Phase One, which is anticipated to last 2-4 weeks, the schools will operate on an early dismissal schedule. The afternoons are reserved for remote office hours and professional collaboration. Wednesdays are all-remote instructional days, following the early dismissal school schedules. Families also can select a full-time remote program.

A survey will go out this week, asking families to confirm their selections for either the in-person hybrid model or the full-time remote option. Every family must respond once for each child, no later than Friday, August 14

If you have specific questions about a school, please direct your inquiries to your child’s principal.

I’m also including the latest supplementary guidance from the state regarding the wearing of face coverings.

Our plans are, of course, subject to change based on the course of the pandemic and the evolving guidance from the state, county, and local health officials. We will continue to keep you updated about our planning for the fall.

The next Board of Education meeting will be on Monday, August 24 at 7:30 pm. The restart and recovery plan will be on the agenda for adoption at that meeting.

Thank you for your patience and ongoing support.

Very truly yours,

George P. Alexis
