Update from the Superintendent, 8-5-21

 Office of the Superintendent

August 5, 2021

Dear Parents and School Community Members,

As we move into August, I want to provide a brief update on our planning for the new school year. Since the state issued its guidance in July, we have been working on a plan for the safe return to full-time in-person learning for our students. The governor has been clear that a remote learning option is not permissible for this coming school year.

In late June when the virus data was more favorable, we were hopeful that we would be able to explore a mask-optional policy for vaccinated individuals, but as many of you know, the CDC’s current guidance recommends universal mask wearing indoors for K-12 school settings. The state has not yet issued revised guidance on this issue, and we do not anticipate receiving any updates from the state until late August. In the meantime, based on the CDC guidance and the recommendation of our local health official, mask wearing indoors will be required for all students and staff.

In addition to universal mask wearing, we have been working with our local health official to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff in September. We no longer have to adhere to six feet of physical distancing or limit bus capacity, but we are planning for at least three feet of physical distancing whenever practicable in the classrooms and on buses, and contact tracing and quarantine practices recommended by the state remain in place. Also still in place are the CDC’s travel recommendations, and based on our local health official’s recommendation, we have continued to enforce these restrictions, including the quarantine period for unvaccinated individuals. Please keep in mind that the first day of school for students is Wednesday, September 1.

We also have to emphasize the importance of keeping children home if they are sick or exhibiting symptoms. The good news for the fall is that we do not anticipate requiring families to complete the daily screening form in Genesis. Rather, we currently intend to have each family complete a one-time form in the return-to-school materials in August, but we do need all families to commit to screening their children at home on a daily basis, in an effort to keep the community safe.

I will provide you with an update on our plan when more information becomes available. Our next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 7:00 pm. As in July, there will be an in-person option for attending,

I hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of summer with your family and friends. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Very truly yours,

George P. Alexis
